Return To Terroir Tasting, Stockholm, 1st September 2008
La Renaissance des Appellations Return To Terroir "Biodynamy, wine-growing for the future" tasting was held at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm on Monday 1st September 2008. 59 wine-growers were presenting their wines. The tasting was ran by the Nordic Wine Institute.
The venue itself was too cramped and, as usual, the tables used for each winery were too small.
Here are the brief wine tasting notes that I took :
Ngeringa Vinyard
This winery is new and located on Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. I particularly liked their wines however. The Syrah was flavourful without being too peppery (reminiscent of a Crozes Hermitage), the Pinot Noir was very fruity, the Chardonnay was Chablis-like but was showing some oak, and the Rose was dry with some spice but I thought lacking some acidity and was my least preferred wine.
Chateau Fonroque
Located near Saint-Emilion. The wines were presented by Alain Moueix. The vineyard has been practising biodynamic viticulture since 2003. The 2007 had cherry fruit, tannins but was drinkable even now (B). The 2006 was richer, more tannic, less fruity, and should be aged (B-). The blend is mostly Merlot with approximately a quarter Cabernet Franc.
Chateau Ferran
This winery is situated in Entre-Deux-Mers. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The 2005 was drinkable but would be better with some age (B). The 2007 white oaked wine was nice to drink (B-) and preferable to theit unoaked version which could be better with food (C).
Chateau La Grolet
This winery is in Cotes de Bourg and has been biodynamic since 2000. The 2005, mostly Merlot with some Cabernet Sauvignon, was passable (C).
Coulee de Serrant
Both of the wines on show were disappointing. The wines tasted were 2006 Les Vieux Clos (C) and 2006 Coulee de Serrant (C+). Possibly they need some age to show their best ?
Domaine de Chateau Gaillard
Two Saumur wines were available for testing. the 2006 was very fruity with some tannins (C+) and the 2007, drawn from barrel in March/April 2008, was lacking some fruit I thought (C).
Maison M. Chapoutier
I was expecting better from this winery. 2003 Cornas (C+), La Sizeranne Hermitage 2001 (C+), Cote Rotie La Mordonne 2001 (B-), and the Le Pavillon 2001 Ermitage Red (B).
Weingut Wittmann
Situated in Rheinhesses. Gruener Silvaner Trocken 2007 was very fruity (C), Weisser Burgunder Trocken 2007 was showing some minerals (B-), Riesling Trocken 2007 (B-), and Westhofener Riesling Trocken S2007 , which was picked later than the normal riesling (B).
Domaine de Beudon
Located in Valais, Switzerland. The Fendant 2002 was very fruity (C+) whilst the 2003 was not so good (C-). The 2004 Dole (Gamay and Pinot Noir blend) (C+), and the Gammay 2005 (C+).

Bag-in-Box in France
Whilst on holiday in France and Switzerland this summer, I visited the local Carrefour in Ferney-Voltaire in France. Trundling down the aisles, I happened to notice quite a lot of bag-in-box wines. Though not as popular as in Sweden, this trend seems to growing. My last time in a French supermarket was three years ago in Bordeaux where I visited a couple of supermarkets, including Auchan, and bag-in-box was virtually non-existant. Will bag-in-box take over the everyday wine drinking market in France in the same way it has in Sweden ?

Domaine des Bossons Visit July 2011, Peissy, Geneva, Switzerland
On July 18th 2011, we took the train from Geneva Cornavin to Satigny. Laure Leyvraz picked up from the station and took us to the Domaine des Bossons winery. The winery has 29 hectares of vineyard and grows 15 different grape varieties. The domaine is owned by Eric Leyvraz who we met briefly. His daughters, Laure and Valerie, are now involved in the business and will eventually take over. Eric inherited the domaine from his grandfather, Albert Desbaillets in 1971.
The domaine has the same winemaker as Cave & Domaine Les Perries, Sebastien Schwarz.
The estate was organic from 1995 to 2006 but the estate gave up from 2007 onwards due to ideological reasons.
In addition to the Sauvignon Gris 2010 and the Le Vieux Clocher Fut 2009 (see separate blogposts) , I particularly liked the Gamaret.

Book : Wine by Andre Domine
The 2008 version of Wine by Andre Domine is a new completely revised edition. It weighs in at a mighty 900 pages. It was published by Ullmann Publishing in August 2008.
The book is a very good wine companion. There is something in the book for almost everybody. The book mainly focuses upon areas of the world and their wine producers and wines. North and South America, and Australia are given poor coverage whilst Europe is covered in depth including England and Wales, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. France gets 20% of the book with Italy and Spain getting about 10-15% each.
There are also good sections on wine and health, the chemical composition of wine, the history of wine, and wine and food pairing. For the wine knowledgeable then such subjects such as integrated pest management, barrel management, and vineyard management are covered; even esoteric subjects such as the manufacture of wine bottles are given the in-depth treatment.
I can thoroughly recommend this book both for beginners and experts alike.
The book can be purchased at Amazon online :

Cave & Domaine Les Perrieres Visit July 2011, Peissy, Geneva, Switzerland
We visited Cave & Domaine Les Perrieres on July 14th 2011. We took the train from Geneva to Satigny and were picked up from the station and driven to the winery in the company van. The winery and estates have been owned by the Rochaix family for nearly 200 years and present day, eight generation, owner Bernard Rochaix came out to greet us when we arrived. Today, the winery works 82 hectares of which 16 are owned by the domaine. The winemaker is Sebastien Schwarz.
We tried several wines of which we bought three (see separate blog posts). Of the others, my impressions were :
- Chasselas : Fruity glugger, Mark : C
- Aligote : Almonds, very dry yet fruity, Mark : C
- Gamaret : Rustic, fruity, smooth tannins, Mark : B-
- Muscat : Sweet, fruity, cutting acidity on a long finish
On the whole, the wines were very good and exceptional value for what seemed to be low prices.
