TN : Geil Riesling Trocken Spaetlese 2007, Bechtheimer Geyersberg, Weingut Oekonomierat Johann I Geil Erben, Rheinhessen, Germany

The Geil estate is located in the commune of Bechtheim, Wonnegau district, in the Rheinhessen. The origins go back to 1871, when Georg Geil purchased the manor house, thus laying the foundation for viticulture here. His son, Johann Geil I. Ökonomierat zu Bechtheim, was for many years the mayor of Bechtheim. Today the estate is owned by Karl and his son Johannes Geil-Bierschenk, who is the cellarmaster.

The total size of the property is 55 hectares, with a total vineyard area of 27 hectares, with holdings in the Geyersberg, Gotteshilfe, Hasensprung, Rosengarten, Stein Heiligkreuz and Pilgerpfad sites. Riesling is planted on around one third of the area, other varieties include Pinot Noir, Pinot Madeleine, Kerner, Silvaner, Dornfelder, Blauer Portugieser, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Rieslaner, Huxelrebe and Scheurebe. The grapes are pressed gently, then fermented under temperature-controlled conditions, the wines are then matured in either stainless steel or in oak barrels, and bottled early. The estate specialises in sweet wines and sweet botrytis desert wines at Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese level, as well as Eiswein. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines as well as spirits are also produced.

Book : The Great Wine Swindle by Malcolm Gluck

This book covers what is wrong with today's wine scene. Topic covered include supermarkets, restaurants, wine shows, wine writers, high alcohol wines, organic wines, and wine guides.

On the whole this book was quite enjoyable. It had its irritating parts though. There were some inaccuracies. Malcolm Gluck comes across as being bitter towards other wine writers which is a bit tiring. He also fails to name names etc in a lot of cases. I did enjoy his "dig" at Raymond Blanc though. He complains about the language of wine reviews but his own published comments on 2003 Burgundies suffer the same maladies that he himself complains about.

I wonder who this book is aimed for since the wine fan will know most of the content already and it is too detailed for a novice who will lose interest.

TN : Saile and Sabga Connoissseur Merlot, Vin dePays d'Oc, France

I had this wine on a RyanAir flight from Stockholm to Amsterdam on Sunday and on the return yesterday. It was either this or a Chardonnay (also by Saile and Sabga). I was put off the Chardonnay due to a neighbour complaining that his beer was hot: however, I had to drink something so a second bottle of red was drunk on my return journey !. The wine was bottled under srewcap.

This wine was boring, uninteresting, and over-priced.
