The grapes are grown on vineyards consisting of Mica schist soil with a south-westerly aspect.  The soil is mechanically worked (using plow) without using herbicides. The vines are trellised in double "guyot" with two arms titled to 30 degrees with two inclined eyes on every arm. Trellising is in two dimensions to a height of 1.70 metres. Manual disbudding helps to quantify the harvest by avoiding any green grape harvest. During phytosanitary treatments, no systemic products are used.

The Syrah content of this wine is a mix of the classic Mass Selection clone and Chave, one of the newer clones to be grown in Hawke’s Bay. This wine is 99% Syrah and 1% Viognier. The hand-picked bunches were fully de-stemmed without crushing, and fermented in traditional open-top wooden cuves. After pressing, the wine was put to 100% new burgundian oak barriques and allowed to mature for 16 months before bottling. The TA is 6.1 grammes per litre, pH is 3.59, residual sugar is 0 grammes per litre, and dry extract is 32.

The vines wer trellised to a 5 wire hedge. The yield was 4.5 tons per hectare. The wine spent five days on skins in open fermenters at 28 degrees; the cap was punched down manually every two hours. The wine spent 26 months in French Nevers medium toasted oak.
